History

Bronzeville’s residents came to Chicago during The Great Migration from 1890 to 1950. Escaping racism and lack of equal opportunity in the South, Blacks came to Chicago seeking education and employment. The largest number of Chicago’s African Americans settled between 18th Street and 51st Street to the north and south, Cottage Grove and State Street to the east and west. This area became known as Bronzeville.
