The St. Augustine Historical Society in St. Augustine, Florida seeks an executive director for its chief executive officer. For more than 125 years the Society has conserved historical buildings, documents and artifacts relevant to the history of St. Augustine, northeast Florida and the colonial southeast. The Society is the oldest guardian of history in the nation’s oldest city. Its buildings are some of the oldest Spanish colonial structures in the U.S., located in the 16th century section of the city and within sight of historic Matanzas Bay.
Primary Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall direction of the society and its programs at the direction of the Board of Trustees, the management of its finances, the care and development of its collections and physical plant. The executive director manages day-to-day operations located in four Spanish colonial buildings: two house museums, an historical library and a rental site, and oversees a staff of 20 and volunteers.

The Director should have the ability to:
  • Oversee the business aspects of the Society
  • Promote visitation to the site and work with the heritage-tourism and education community
  • Write and administer grants
  • Evaluate research projects and speak with knowledge and authority on pertinent historical topics.
  • Qualifications
    Advanced degree preferred in appropriate field: history, anthropology, humanities, museum studies, administration or related field. Experience may substitute for graduate degree. The candidate’s record should demonstrate experience in management, educational programs, and resource and program development with a museum or similar organization. Success in securing grants and fundraising strongly desired.
