The Associate Director plays a key role in all exhibition-related activities, including:
- researching and proposing exhibitions appropriate to the Gallery’s mission, and reviewing proposals from outside curators
- developing exhibition budgets
- overall responsibility for the implementation of exhibitions including all functions of museum registrar, installation of exhibitions, and serving as liaison to artists and guest curators
- offering gallery talks to members of the public and to BRIC Rotunda Gallery donors, and organizing other public programs
- overall responsibility for general maintenance of gallery facility, security systems, and equipment, including all audio-visual equipment
Other duties include:
- Responsibility for administrative functions including the preparation of payment vouchers, invoices and receipts for accounting office, and managing petty cash ;
- Maintaining slide registry, files, and photographic archives
- Supervising interns and volunteers
- Overseeing two juried programs: the Emerging Curator Initiative, which currently provides two emerging curators annually with the opportunity to present an exhibition in our Project Room space; and a joint residency program to make BRIC’s Brooklyn Community Access Television Media Center and training programs available to professional Brooklyn-affiliated artists
The Associate Director is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Visual Arts Programs.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge of contemporary art in New York and beyond. He or she will be an enthusiastic team player committed to the goal of helping to develop BRIC Rotunda Gallery into Brooklyn’s premiere space for contemporary art. Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in art history, studio arts, museum studies, or arts administration, and a minimum of three years of related experience in a museum or non-profit gallery.
Good writing and public-speaking skills are also essential. The successful candidate must be detail-oriented and be able to completely oversee the installation of exhibitions. Knowledge of Brooklyn and its art community a plus.
