The Director of Individual Giving reports directly to the Vice President of Development and External Affairs. The Director is responsible for developing, managing, and executing all upper level individual giving programs. The Director of Individual Giving will manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, and assist in the formulation of a major gifts strategy for WMF from prospect identification, research, cultivation, and stewardship. In addition, the Director of Individual Giving will oversee and provide guidance for the Manager of Individual Giving and a Development Associate to start.
Primary Responsibilities
- Thoroughly understand WMF, its mission and policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs and finances.
- Develop, manage, and execute all upper level individual giving programs.
- Assist in developing and executing a strategy of approach for each prospect, involving development staff, senior staff and WMF’s trustees.
- Work to expand WMF’s donor base, and increase the level of unrestricted gifts.
- Solicit annual fund and project/program specific gifts.
- Work closely with program staff to understand projects in need of funding.
- Develop and manage a personal portfolio of donors and prospects and assist in the formulation of a major gifts strategy for WMF.
- Oversee the individual giving program and work effectively as part of a small but growing team.
- Work closely with Director of Special Events to maximize donor participation and follow up for cultivation events.
- Assist in implementation of a planned giving program.
- Implement and manage capital campaigns.
- Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, and social and community trends related to WMF; ensure that the staff is informed of changes in trends and initiatives that might impact the organization.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 7-10 years of individual giving development experience and experience working within a complex national or international organization.
- Demonstrated success in major gift solicitation for a cultural or related organization.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, cultivate, solicit and close major gifts from individuals.
- Flexibility and experience in building a solid major gifts program and proven ability to effectively build and inspire a team.
- Demonstrated success closing major gifts and a clear understanding of the tactics required to build and mange a prospect pool.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, maintain and strengthen relationships with significant donors on behalf of an institution, and an understanding of the record keeping and stewardship systems that support a successful donor relations program (particularly Raiser’s Edge).
- Experienced in soliciting gifts from a national and/or international constituency base.
- The ability to organize and prioritize fundraising activities effectively and to guide staff members in managing their particular responsibilities.
- A proven manager that promotes teamwork, creativity and open communication.
- Ability and willingness to participate in events outside the workday schedule.
- Ability to travel as necessary, including internationally.
- The ability to work productively with institutional colleagues around the world on behalf of the fundraising enterprise.
