The Curator is a senior staff position at Historic Spanish Point, a 30 acre environmental, archaeological, and historic site located in Osprey (Sarasota County) Florida. The museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums and the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Curator is responsible for the daily management and care of the collections, including the historic buildings, gardens, archaeological elements, artifacts, documents and photographs. The curator is also responsible for permanent and changing exhibitions and a small research center. The Curator reports to the Executive Director and is part of the museum team that works together to forward the mission of Historic Spanish Point.
Primary Responsibilities
 Care of the collections, including historic buildings, artifacts, documents, and photographs – ensuring both physical and intellectual control of over 20,000 objects.
 Care of exhibits on site, including cleaning and maintenance of Guptill house, packing house, window to the past, chapel, as well as outdoor exhibits and signs
 Management of temporary exhibits and holiday displays.
 Coordinator with Site Horticulturist for all disaster preparedness activities
 Grant-writing for grants related to exhibits and conservation projects
 Direct supervision of restoration/rehabilitation projects
 Management of curatorial interns and volunteers
 Assist with all other museums activities as required, including special events, education programs, publications, and outreach activities
Qualifications
 Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree in history, material culture, museum studies or a related field preferred.
 Working knowledge of AAM collections management standards, and experience with artifact registration, object care and storage, loan procedures and related tasks.
 Excellent computer skills
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills
 Motivated, organized, detail-oriented, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
 Some physical activity for care of a 30-acre historic site is required.
Compensation
 Annual Salary: mid-level curatorial position, salary commensurate with experience
 Leave: 10 vacation and 9 sick days annually, beginning after six months of employment
 Holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and one personal day
 Health Plan: major medical and dental, beginning three months after hire
 Retirement Plan: 4% of salary and 3% match beginning one year after hire, with a five-year vesting schedule
