ASSISTANT REGISTRAR, AVEDON ARCHIVE (YEAR-TO-YEAR POSITION) AT THE CENTER FOR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA, TUCSON, ARIZONA
POSITION SUMMARY: The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) seeks applicants for this position who will provide enforcement of policies and procedures pertaining to the acquisition, access, security, preservation, collection management and disposition of the Avedon Archive. The position will also manage arrangements for loans, packing, shipping, insurance and storage as it refers to this collection on loan from the Richard Avedon Foundation. The position will manage temporary and student workers. The Assistant Registrar reports directly to the registrar and engages in planning with the preparator and the Richard Avedon Foundations.

The Center for Creative Photography is an archive and research center located on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson. We retain the archives of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Garry Winogrand, Harry Callahan, and other great 20th century photographers—over 50 archives in all.
CCP MISSION STATEMENT: The Center for Creative Photography actively collects, preserves, interprets, manages and makes available materials that are essential to understanding photography and its history. Through its archives, collections, education programs, exhibitions, and publications, the Center promotes research into and appreciation of the photographic medium while safeguarding original objects for posterity.
Primary Responsibilities
* Facilitates work processes so that standard museum practices for care and storage of Avedon photographic materials are well established and understood.
* Participates in long-term planning for the Archive with the registrar, preparator and the Richard Avedon Foundation; communicates with the Avedon Foundation staff on a nearly daily basis so that they are informed of work activities and to maintain a positive working relationship with the employees of the Richard Avedon Foundation.
* Oversees all aspects of shipping and receiving Avedon Archive materials, including shipping arrangements, insurance, packing and disposition of incoming material.
* Provides specialized reference service utilizing a high level of expertise in the area of photography while developing and maintaining in-depth subject knowledge of the Avedon Archive.
* Provides physical security for the collection materials by monitoring their use. Works with the preparator to provide storage for the collection. Applies established conservation standards to the care and handling of photographic materials.
* Provides supervision of temporary and student employees as necessary.
* Provides access to collection and archive materials to researchers and Center curators.
* Coordinates specialized cataloging and inventory control for Avedon Archive by using Artbase database system. Creates indexes and other special tools to provide access to the Avedon Archive.
* Evaluates physical condition of Avedon Archive materials; creates condition reports; utilizes scanning equipment to import condition reports into Artbase.
* Identifies, upholds, and communicates the issues surrounding copyright, privacy, and confidentiality regarding the Avedon Archive.
Qualifications
ARIZONA BOARD OF REGENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Not applicable for this position.
ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Bachelor's degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Archival or related field.
* Three years of collections management and/or registration experience.
* Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Master's degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Archival or related field.
* Professional knowledge of handling and preservation of photograph collections.
* In-depth knowledge of registration procedures in museums including processing incoming and outgoing loans, processing additions to long-term loan, traveling exhibitions, collection management and security.
* Experience with computer databases for museum collections.
* Attention to detail especially in selecting prints for shipping, packaging and shipping and record keeping.
* Ability to access, prints and other archive material within a prompt turn-around time.
* Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
* Initiative in planning for and protecting the collection.
* Exceptional interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work in a team based environment and work well under pressure.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse colleagues and university community.
