Job Categories: Administrative, Director, Education
For nearly forty years, Sotheby’s Institute of Art (The Institute) has been preparing students for distinguished careers in the international world of art. Today, The Institute comprises academic centers in London, New York and Singapore. Its international focus reflects a commitment to interactive “hands-on” education that draws creatively upon the resources of important art centers worldwide.
The Institute curriculum distinguishes itself from that of other, more traditional graduate programs in art by providing comprehensive study of the many and varied facets of the art world. The curriculum is designed to provide each student with a pathway to a career in the international art community. Sotheby’s auction house provides students with privileged access to pre-sale viewings, talks by experts, and handling sessions—a unique object-based learning opportunity in which objects are analyzed and studied at close range.
Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, the Institute’s New York campus offers easy access to the city’s rich cultural and historical resources that make New York City such a unique and vibrant place to study art. Students visit the many commercial galleries, artists’ studios, and museums that further enhance their first-hand knowledge of works of art. Along with art history and analysis, students are introduced to the entire range of practical and business applications of the international art community—from auction houses, galleries, art appraisal, criticism, restoration and collection to consulting, art law and museum management and beyond. The New York location has been accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design since 1989.
The Institute has an annual aggregate operating budget of $15 million and is largely tuition-driven with 325 students worldwide. The New York location has an annual operating budget of $5 million. For this academic year, New York has approximately 110 students. At full capacity, the NY location can accept 250-300 students.
Beginning in 2003, Cambridge Information Group (CIG) acquired, restructured and expanded the London, New York and Singapore campuses of The Institute. As an operating company of CIG, the Institute has a special royalty-based licensing agreement with Sotheby’s, Inc, providing the Institute the right to use the Sotheby’s name for educational purposes.
