Project Archivist
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Miami, Florida
Posted: 1/6/2009
Level: Mid
Type: Permanent

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an AAM-accredited, American Renaissance estate in a spectacular subtropical setting on Biscayne Bay. Vizcaya consists of 14 National Historic Landmark buildings on 50 acres of grounds, with 2,500 art objects and 35,000 archival items. The archives consist of photographs, manuscripts, documents, correspondence, ephemera and architectural drawings and blueprints. Most of these materials pertain to the conception, design and construction of Vizcaya’s main house, the gardens and the adjacent village.

The museum is in midst of developing new programs to engage the local community in learning through the arts, history, and the environment, and embarking on a government-funded $50-million capital program to rehabilitate the main house, gardens, and the Vizcaya village, which will open to the public for the first time. Vizcaya attracts approximately 150,000 visitors each year.

For management purposes, the Vizcaya archives are organized in four record groups: 1. the Estate Records, which include correspondence, financial records and the Deering papers; 2. the Museum records, which pertain to Vizcaya since it became a public museum in 1952; 3. the architectural drawings and blueprints; and 4. the photographic collection.

In collaboration with the staff of the Collections and Curatorial Division, and under the supervision of the Collections and Archives Manager, the Project Archivist will process the Estate records and Museum records. The goal of this project is to physically rearrange and preserve the records; to describe and catalog the records and to create finding aids; and to create guidelines for access, use and maintenance.

Please note that this is a contractual, temporary position, and not employment by Vizcaya Museum and Gardens or Miami-Dade County.

Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution or Master’s Degree in History or Museum Studies with Archival concentration.
