Nature of Work: This is a highly responsible executive level position, directing all activities of the Coral Gables Museum, a new cultural institution in Coral Gables, Florida. Coral Gables, a community designed in the City Beautiful tradition and incorporated in 1925, is situated in Miami-Dade County and is known for its historically significant Mediterranean-inspired architecture and its multi-national corporate and residential populations. Scheduled to open in late 2010, the Museum will be housed both in a new gallery structure and in the City's original 1939 Police and Fire Station, a National Register property located in the City's central business district, currently undergoing a complete LEED certified restoration. The 10,000 square foot Museum will focus on the Civic Arts of architecture, urban design and planning, sustainable development and historical and environmental preservation. The Executive Director is responsible for the operation, management, and maintenance of the Coral Gables Museum and works under the supervision of the Board of Trustees.

Illustrative Tasks: The Director possesses an entrepreneurial spirit: the enthusiasm, energy and dedication necessary to successfully fund, launch and grow a new facility. In addition, the Director has strong vision for shaping and scaling the mission to gain an international reputation while still serving the interests and needs of the local community; will implement systems and policies necessary to direct the day-to-day business operations of the Coral Gables Museum; oversee negotiations, create marketing campaigns; oversee the development and installation of museum facility finishes; oversee the development of the collection and permanent exhibits; prepare the facility for opening with regard to equipment and technology needs; plan the Museum opening; direct and supervise educational and exhibit (permanent and traveling) activities and programming for the Museum; oversee recruiting, selection, training and management of staff and volunteers; direct and supervises the acquisition, care and storage of materials for museum archives and permanent collection; ensure conformance with established security and safety policies and procedures; establish and maintain cooperative planning and working relationships with various public and private organizations and volunteer groups, assisting such groups in activities to benefit the Museum; serve as liaison to the City of Coral Gables; prepare and supervise the preparation of the annual budget, estimates and justifications; control and account for expenditure of operational funds; review and make recommendations for gift shop and food and beverage operations, and revisions of various fees and charges; oversee operation of revenue-producing activities at the Museum, including grants, membership, and securing and developing touring exhibits; encourage employee development through participation in training programs, educational classes and professional seminars and organizations; represent the Museum in the community and perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Thorough knowledge of principals of public and business administration. Considerable knowledge of curatorial and conservation requirements of a major museum operation. Considerable knowledge of budget preparation and monitoring procedures. Considerable knowledge of human resource practices and supervisory principals. Considerable knowledge of public relations principals and techniques. The candidate must possess the skills to concentrate on issues at hand while embracing the Museum Board's philosophy to continually enhance and broaden the cultural scale of the facility.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in management, art history, fine arts, architecture, museum management, or related field. Master's Degree preferred. A minimum of five to ten years of progressively responsible professional experience with a museum, cultural or educational organization. Supervisory and managerial experience is required. Museum, program, or initiative start-up experience a plus.
