The National Museum of Dentistry (NMD) has enjoyed outstanding growth, an enormous increase in national awareness and strong support from the dental profession since its opening in June 1996. NMD is recognized as a valued cultural asset to the University of Maryland Baltimore campus and local community, providing school programs, home school days, Girl Scout programs and family days for thousands of visitors each year. A committed Board of Visitors and other support groups made up of well known and respected individuals successfully work with staff on behalf of the museum. NMD has achieved a positive momentum to raise funds nationally by making the museum accessible on site and around the country via traveling exhibits and popular online programs. This success is in large part due to having a Director who is experienced in museum management and is able to provide the necessary leadership and direction to the museum staff.
Highlights include:
• NMD is an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution;
• NMD was designated by the United States Congress as the official museum of the profession;
• The Museum received a national award for excellence from the Friends of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and was presented with the prestigious Shils Award in 2008;
• NMD’s traveling exhibitions have educated more than 2 million visitors to children’s and science museums in 21 states;
• MouthPower Online, available in English and Spanish, received 138,000 unique hits in 2008;
• NMD has established an endowment of more than $3 Million; and has achieved 65% of the campus capital campaign goal of $8 Million which is targeted to conclude in 2011.
Primary Responsibilities
The new Director will build strong foundation, continuing to reach beyond the borders of a conventional museum to develop exhibitions and programs that educate local, national and international audiences about the history of dentistry and about the importance of oral health in a healthy life.
Additional responsibilities include:
• Demonstrated record of sound fiscal management and the creation and implementation of successful fundraising initiatives;
• Managing and inspiring a highly qualified staff by setting focused and measurable objectives for sustaining excellence. Establishing efficient operations including cost controls;
• Ensuring effective communication and partnerships with campus leaders, the Board of Visitors, and community constituencies;
• Representing the interests of the museum on campus and to the public and professional associations.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s and additional certification preferred) and 7 years of related experience with 3 years of experience at a management/leadership level. The ideal candidate will have previous museum experience; will have a strong commitment to education and the role of museums in education; and an enthusiasm for technology.
