The 390-million-year-old fossil beds are among the largest naturally exposed, easily accessible Devonian fossil beds in the world. It is a coral-sponge patch reef. The park features a beautiful interpretive center overlooking the fossil beds containing an exhibit gallery and video presentation. The fossil beds are in the bed and bank of the Ohio River and are best exposed late summer to late autumn.

Nestled in the center of Iowa State University, the Farm House Museum sits as a monument to early Iowa State history and culture. As the first building on campus as well as a National Historic Landmark, the Farm House was built in 1860 before campus was occupied by students or classrooms. The prairie landscape was bleak and desolate at the time, and those first farm tenants primed the land for agricultural experimentation.

The 1856 stone home of Dr. Samuel Gilbert is the oldest rock structure in Dallas County that is still on its original foundation. The 1870s Log House and single crib barn from Pilot Point, Texas were brought to the Park and restored to represent the initial pioneers to this region in the 1840s.
