Miss Ima Hogg, last private owner of the site, conceived turning the site into a museum in the early 1930s. In 1958, she donated the plantation house and grounds to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; 11 years later, she donated the artifacts collections as well. The site was christened Varner-Hogg Plantation after the first and last owners of the land. Miss Hogg remained involved with the site until her death in 1975.

The Venice Museum & Archives (VMA) is housed in the charming and historical 1927 Triangle Inn listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum is located near Venice Beach and within walking distance of downtown Venice. The VMA has temporary and permanent exhibits on display year round, such as "Dr. Fred H. Albee: A New Beginning for Nokomis and Venice" and "Venice Area Fossils from the Burgess Collection.

Ventfort Hall is an imposing Jacobean Revival-style mansion built in 1893 for Sarah Morgan, the sister of J. P. Morgan. Designed by the architects Rotch & Tilden, it is located in Lenox, Massachusetts. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and declared an official project of “Save America’s Treasures,” a Millennium program of Hillary Rodham Clinton and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Ventfort Hall is the home of The Museum of the Gilded Age.

The Vermilion County War Museum is located in Danville's original public library building. Constructed in 1903 through a gift of Andrew Carnegie, the building served as the library until 1995, when overcrowded conditions necessitated moving to a new location. The Carnegie building was donated by the City of Danville to the War Museum board, and through the efforts of a great number of individuals donating thousands of hours of labor, it has been restored to its present condition.

Villa Finale was the home of Walter Mathis, a leading preservationist in San Antonio, Texas. Walter Mathis is widely recognized as the catalyst for the revitalization of the King William neighborhood, now a National Register Historic District. In addition to his work in King William, Walter Mathis was an advocate for city and statewide historic preservation, as well as a civic and cultural leader.

Overlooking Lake Michigan, the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum was designed and built in the style of an Italian Renaissance villa by architect David Adler in 1923. The building was originally the residence of former A.O. Smith president, Lloyd Smith, and his family. The museum features fine and decorative arts dating from the 15th through the 18th centuries, wrought-iron masterpieces by Cyril Colnik, the Renaissance Garden, and changing exhibitions.
