The Sam Rayburn Library and Museum is located in Bonham, Texas, four blocks west of the business district on U. S. Highway 56. It was established in this North Texas town of 7,000 people by Speaker Sam Rayburn who made this community his home for more than half a century. As he explained to a friend, I have a lot of valuable books and I won t want them to be scattered. I want to keep them together in the community which I have served all these years.

The Salmon Ruins Library holds over 17,000 books, periodicals, and technical reports on the various aspects of archaeology, anthropology, geology, and regional history. The Salmon Ruins Library is open to every member of the public for research purposes. However, check-out privileges are restricted to members of the San Juan County Museum Association, San Juan County Archaeological Association, and to members of the Totah Tracers. The Salmon Ruins Library is staffed only by volunteers.

After Anna and Flora donated their home to the Josephine County Historical Society, the Board decided to continue the Schmidt's tradition of hospitality by developing the house as a museum to benefit the community. The Schmidt House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 2004, confirming the historic significance of the house. Historic buildings are a community's tangible link with the past in a world in which rapid technological change is occurring.
