The bank of the Feather River below the Bath House was once the site of a Maidu fishing village. The river provided a bountiful supply of giant Chinook salmon and acorns were harvested from the groves of Blue Oaks. Gold was discovered in the Feather River in 1849 bringing a tent city of fortune hunters virtually overnight. The gold soon ran out and the miners left as quickly as they had appeared.

The Ford House is a historic home and visitor center for the Mendocino Headlands State Park. It was built in 1854 for Jerome Ford, the village of Mendocino's aknowledged founder. Being located on Mendocino's main street it serves as a visitor center for the town as well as the Park. One of our main focuses at present is the need for restoration. Due to recurring California State budget cuts, the maintenance of the house has been neglected.

Dinosaur Ridge is an outdoor museum along a trail along Alameda Parkway that goes up and over a spectacular mountain of a type called a hogback. Locally the mountain is named Dinosaur Ridge because of abundant dinosaur fossils along the trail. One site has Late Jurassic dinosaur bones from about 150 million years ago exposed in a cliff of sandstone; another has over 300 footprints made by Early Cretaceous dinosaurs about 100 million years ago.
