The Museum is housed in two houses that were once a part of a hotel. The houses are joined together. A third house burned in the 80's and it is currently being replaced and is under construction. The exhibits typlify the history of the area.

The name Eyaawing was selected by tribal members. It translates as “Who we are” in Anishinaabemowin, the native language of the Grand Traverse Band and Michigan’s Anishinaabek. Eyaawing’s programming will be twofold, with some programs designed specifically for tribal members and other programs designed to share the culture, language and spirit of the Grand Traverse Band with the public.
