The Augusta County Historical Society will enter a new phase in 2005 with the opening of the R.R. Smith Center for History and Art. In a restored 1895 railroad hotel in the heart of historic Staunton, Virginia, we will share this adaptively rehabilitated facility with the local preservation organization, the Historic Staunton Foundation, and the local affiliate of the Virginia Museum, the Staunton-Augusta Art Center.

The Burwell-Morgan Mill, established in 1785, is the oldest operable merchant mill in the Shenandoah Valley. In the mid-nineteenth century the mill operated twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, processing more than sixty thousand bushels of wheat per year. The community of Millwood grew around this commercial center as related businesses were established, and by way of the seaports at Alexandria and Baltimore, mill products were shipped abroad.

The society maintains four historical buildings dating from 1817 to 1892 including Magnolia Grange (1822 plantation), the County Museum with five galleries of Chesterfield history, an 1892 jail with police and fire department exhibits and a gift shop. (The jail at this time is closed for maintenance.)

Cole Digges, a Revolutionary War hero, built his house in Richmond in 1805. Renovated in 1995, the building now houses the statewide offices of Preservation Virginia, which are open by appointment. The Cole Digges House is located in the Historic Franklin Street District of Richmond.

The Collingwood Library and Museum on Americanism (CLMA) occupies 8.75 acres of land on the banks of the Potomac River, midway between Alexandria and Mount Vernon on what was once part of George Washington's River Farm.
