The borough of Alburtis was incorporated in 1913 by the joining of two boroughs, Alburtis & Lockridge. The Alburtis-Lockridge Historical Society began in 1976, the year of our country's bicentennial. We are a group to preserve the history of the villages of Alburtis and Lock Ridge.

The Allegheny Portage Railroad has many interesting things to see. Visit the Lemon House- a historic tavern built to accommodate travelers. Discover the Engine House- a replica of the many buildings that made up the Portage Railroad. Watch a movie in our visitor center and browse the many exhibits and models. Drive out to the Staple Bend Tunnel unit to hike and explore the nine hundred foot tunnel (remember you need to walk 2 miles each direction when visiting the tunnel).

In 1783, a block house was built by the U.S. Government as protection from the Indians. Adam Reburn was put in charge of the block house and it was called Reburn?s Station. In 1788, Reburn purchased the property that included 200 acres of land and made it his home. Later on, John J. Muse purchased the in the mid- 1800s. John J. Muse was an active politician from 1858 to 1859 and served as treasurer of Allegheny County and represented Allegheny County in the legislature.

The museum opened on June 5, 2010, as a tribute to the thousands of men, women and families who have hiked and maintained the 2,189 mile long hiking trail that passes through 14 states from Maine to Georgia. It is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission in cooperation with the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society.
