Born in Plymouth, Vermont, on July 4, 1872, Coolidge was the son of a village storekeeper. He was graduated from Black River Academy in 1890 and attended Amherst College, graduating with honors, and entered law and politics in Northampton, Massachusetts. Slowly, methodically, he went up the political ladder from councilman in Northampton to Governor of Massachusetts, as a Republican. En route he became thoroughly conservative.

The DAR John Strong Mansion Museum was built in the mid-1790's by General John Strong and his wife Agnes McClure Strong to replace the family's cabin that had been burned by the Indian and Tory forces under General John Burgoyne. Five generations of the Strong family occupied this lovely home until around the Civil War.

The Heritage Winooski Mill Museum opened in July 1998 as a "work-in-progress" exhibition in a donated gallery and hall space of the Champlain Mill, one of the former textile mills which now also houses shops, restaurants, and offices. A highlight of the hall exhibits is a large panorama of the Winooski Falls mill complex, c.1920, by Louis McAllister. There are also sequential maps of the mills site, 1840-1993.

The Preservation Trust of Vermont was founded with the goal of helping Vermonters save their historic places and that is exactly what has happened. In just three decades, the group has helped communities across the state save more than 1,000 buildings – village stores, post offices, schools, barns - all returned to productive use. Just this year alone, the Preservation Trust’s staff of five worked on 352 preservation projects in 155 communities.
