Description

An outdoor museum with reconstruction of American Indian dwellings repesenting a way of life. The construction of the housing units was done under the supervision of the Department of Anthropology from the University of Oklahoma. Reconstructed dwellings reperesent many of the tribes from the Southwest; including Caddo, Cheyenne, Wichita, Pawnee, Navaho, and Apache.

In addition to the outdoor displays, the Center offers guided tours, Indian dancing, Indian arts & crafts, and the Indian City Museum. Nearby is site of the annual American Indian Exposition, the Southern Plains Indian Museum, and the American Indian Hall of Fame.

History

The museum is located on the site of a massacre of the Tonkawa Indians during Civil War by Shawnees and other Indians. It is on land occupied by the former Kiowa, Apache, and Comanche Reservation.

Governance

The museums is currently owned by the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma.
