Description
The mission of the Carnegie Art Center is to provide visual art education, exhibits and enrichments to the Walla Walla region. Our vision for the future includes an opportunity for free art classes for all grade through high school students who desire it.
History
Originally a Carnegie funded library built in 1905 began its life as the public library. After a new library was erected and the building vacated, a group of women from various local art organizations petitioned the city and were granted a $1.00 annual lease. Incorporated in 1971, the group formed a Board of Directors and along with 100's of volunteers have maintained the integrity of both the building, property and exhibit schedule of the Carnegie. It currently operates with one paid, part time Director, with the support of a vigorous Board of Trustees, Advisory Board and a host of loyal volunteers. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1975.
