Description

The society operates three museums: The Daniel Benton Homestead, a 1720 center-chimney home with four fireplaces, original paneling, legends of ghosts. The Old Jail and Museum is an 1856 jail, operated until 1968, and attached 1893 Jailer's home filled with hundreds of fascinating artifacts from Tolland homes, farms and industries. The museum in the Old Tolland County Courthouse is an 1822 courtroom featuring exhibits related to Tolland as county seat. History

Tolland Historical Society was organized in 1966, and currently has more than 400 members.

Artifacts Collections

The former Jailer's home in the Old Jail and Museum at 52 Tolland Green displays hundreds of artifacts used in Tolland homes, farms and businesses in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Old Tolland County Courthouse at 53 Tolland Green is furnished as a working courtroom, with exhibit space at the rear. The Daniel Benton Homestead on Metcalf Road contains furniture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Research Collections

A small research library, genealogical files related to early Tolland families only, collections of family and business papers. It is located at the society's headquarters in the Old Jail and Museum. Open by appointment, usually open Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to noon.
