Description

The Estelle H. Womack Museum of Natural History was officially opened April 1, 1987. Housed in a 5,000 square-foot building, the museum is located on Neathery Lane on the campus of Danville Community College. Dedicated to increasing public awareness of the natural environment, both past and present, the museum collection includes mounted animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects, as well as Indian artifacts, fossils, rocks and minerals. There is an exhibition bee hive that accommodates approximately 60,000 honey bees during the winter months. Funds to construct the building were donated to the Educational Foundation by an anonymous donor, while the land was a gift from the State of Virginia and the City of Danville. The museum merges two major collections--the Johnny Westbrook bird and egg collection that was donated to DCC in the early 1970's, and the Walter Grant big game animal collection, a gift from the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. The Estelle H. Womack Museum of Natural History features the work of Danville-area artists. Twelve dioramas house part of the bird collection in their natural habitat. In addition, many of the small mammals, reptiles and amphibians were donated by area residents.

Services


The Womack Museum has a small gift shop with interesting and inexpensive items for visiting school groups. Adults can find sourwood honey, wild flower prints, books for naturalists and other interesting choices.
