History

Grew out of the Elissa Project, a 1877 sailing ship, that opened in 1982. This project expanded to become the Texas Seaport Museum in 1991.



Artifacts Collections

Other than the Elissa, very small collection of maritime artifacts, 1880-1920 (slightly more than 100 objects).



Research Collections

Some photos and documents; available for research. Extensive photos and drawings of Elissa restoration.



Library

Open to students, scholars, staff; less than 500 volumes, mostly maritime; does not circulate print materials; appointment necessary; cannot assist with inter-library loans.

Visual reference collection: hundreds of slides, mostly of ELISSA restoration, several videos; 50% of permanent collection visually documented.

Facilities

10,000 square feet total; 2,500 square feet exhibition area; 80-person auditorium; wheelchair-accessible; other services for people with disabilities available upon request. Elissa partially accessible with assistance.



Programs

Exhibitions, teacher workshops, docent program, gallery tours, educators guide, lectures, and an overnight program for children, "It's a Sailor's Life"; available for tour/loan. Quarterly family day program, "Hand, Reef, and Steer" traveling trunk program. Sail training program involving ELISSA; "Outpost 001" communities in school program."Maritime Mystery" marine archeology program.
