Description

The Discovery Science Place is a non-profit, hands-on family learning environment whose purpose is to open young minds to science, technology, engineering, math and cultures in order to meet the challenges of our times. Our goal is to: Spark a child's natural curiosity & sense of wonder: Support teachers by providing tools such as programs and training that will assist in meeting curriculum objectives; Provide the family an environment in which to explore and learn together; Form partnerships with community agencies that address the educational needs of children.

History

Recently listed amoung the Top 25 Science Centers by Parents magazine, the museum began as a product of the Junior League of Tyler. The Museum became incorporated and then established a governing board of directors in June of 1991. With the assistance of exhibit creators from the company, Museum Arts of Dallas, the board developed a plan of action to begin fund raising to develop this premier East Texas children's museum. When the Holley family of Tyler donated a vacant car dealership to the museum, the momentum gathered and things began to happen! The community rallied to support the organizatin with financial contributions and volunteer time. In late 1993, the museum opened with its first temporary exhibit- Dinamation Dinosaurs. During its three month visit in excess of 53,000 people toured this attraction. The museum currently consists of three exhibit halls - Discovery Landing, Hometown USA and a traveling exhibit area - that services a 26 county area and attracts visitors around the world.
