Description

The Texas Highway Patrol Museum honors the extraordinary institution that is the Texas Highway Patrol. It is an establishment rich with history and tradition, hope and duty, service and sacrifice. The Museum chronicles the lives and times of DPS officers past and present, while honoring the 74 troopers who have been slain while in the service of the people of Texas.

History

The troopers of the Texas Highway Patrol have diligently served Texans for decades, helping stranded motorists, arresting drunk drivers, confiscating drugs and apprehending fugitives. Highway patrol officers often risk their lives to ensure the continued safety of Texas citizens, both on the roads and in the communities. Seventy-four troopers have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty throughout DPS history.

The museum is located in the heart of San Antonio's tourism district at 812 South Alamo Street, close to the Alamo. All are invited to come down and explore the history of the highway patrol.

"In every phase of the musuems' development, it should function as a bridge between citizens and law enforcement," said Senior Trooper Mark Lockridge, Museum Board Chairman.

The museum features the Hall of Honor exhibit, which profiles the 74 Texas Highway Patrol officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The exhibit displays portraits of the fallen officers and provides a brief description of how these brave individuals gave their lives while in service to their state. Other attractions include the Medal of Valor exhibit, a collection of officer memorabilia, and the History Hall.

On November 18, 2000, the inaugural Hall of Fame ceremony officially opens the permanent exhibit recognizing the achievements of a select few who have contributed to the Highway Patrol, making it one of the most revered branches of law enforcement.

Educational Programs

The "Cruisin' to Coffins" program, which educates students on the perils of driving while intoxicated, was sponsored in conjunction with the San Antonio Chapter of "Mother Against Drunk Driving". In this program, Texas State Troopers administered mock sobriety tests on student volunteers with special lenses and materials that fool sensory perception. Tragic results of irresponsible behavior were shown through victim accounts. The program taught students to see alternatives to drinking and driving and how to defensively recognize warning signs of intoxicated drivers. The program was selected as the 1999 ALLSATE Insurance Safety Leadership Award for Texas for the effectiveness and presentation of the program.

Our Safety Day Program with " Supper Trooper" educates children about personal safety in a relaxed, fun environment.

On Saturday, November 18, 2000, the museum will induct three troopers into the Hall of Fame, recognizing their bravery and dedication to the protection and service of the citizens of Texas
