Description

Collingsworth County Museum seeks to preserve the heritage and arts of this unique area of the eastern Texas Panhandle for future generations. Through the presentation of history and local culture, the Museum seeks to instill pride in the past, reaffirm the quality of life in the present, and promote growth in the future.

History

The Museum was chartered in 1971. Clyde Drake was the first president and Mrs. Nora Drake was the first administrator and curator. In 1972 Hershel and Mildred Tyler gave a building on 15th Street in Wellington as the first home of the Museum. Today that site is devoted to agriculture exhibits and is open only by appointment. The main exhibits are located in three store-front buildings on the square in Wellington. The Sullivan Hardware and Furniture buildings were donated by the Sullivan Family and now house the main exhibits. The Pruden Drug Store building was a gift of Wellington State Bank and is now the art center. Exhibits in the art center are usually by local or Panhandle artists and are prepared by the Collingsworth County Art League.
