Description

The Crawford Historical Museum, run by the Crawford Historical Society, is located in the oldest commercial building of downtown Crawford, Nebraska. It curates a variety of displays detailing the history and culture of the area. The Museum also has collected a wide range of research material, most notably including an extensive obituary database.

Mission

The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the history and culture of Crawford and its surrounding area.

History

Crawford's first museum was founded in 1954, housed in a log schoolhouse moved into town. Run by the Crazy Horse Historical Society (know known as the Crawford Historical Society), the museum was a local landmark until 1991, when it was damaged beyond repair by a major flood. The current museum was formally started soon after in the Crawford Cultural Center building, built in 1887. The Society has since rebuilt its collection due to the generosity of locals concerned with Crawford history.

Library

The Crawford Historical Society maintains a well-rounded collection of local research material. In addition to general local history history books, the Society has extensive material concerning nearby towns Belmont (courtesy of the Belmont Project) and Marsland (courtesy of Opal Hinchley). In addition, a Crawford High School yearbook collection is available for the public. Genealogically, the Museum holds many family history materials and maintains an extensive obituary database.
