Located on the Republic of Texas Plaza, the living-history museum complex consists of two historic houses, the oldest existing one-room schoolhouse in Harris County, a replica barn that can be used for meetings and other activities. Physical office, gift shop and reference library not yet open to the public, will be housed on site in the 1898 house now being restored. All staff/docents are volunteer at this time.
Tours are given to area school children and to others by appointment.
Our buildings are maintained by the Association, endeavoring always to keep to the original as much as possible.
Funds are still needed to complete the interior walls, build a kitchenette, and install air conditioning and heat. If you would like to donate to the Barn Raising Fund, please contact us. In appreciation, all donations starting at $250 will be recognized on a permanent plaque in the barn.
The Baytown Historical Preservation is dedicated to the preservation of structures, artifacts, and documents that reflect and represent the history and culture of Baytown and its people through educational programs and materials that communicate the heritage of the Baytown area.
The Baytown Historical Preservation Association
("BHPA") operates Baytown's only "living history" venue. The 1894 Wooster School, believed to be the oldest one-room schoolhouse
indigenous to Harris County, and the 1910 Brown-McKay House located at the Republic of Texas Plaza Park are preserved and interpreted by BHPA.
Visitors experience rural life in a rice farming community that existed before the discovery of oil and the subsequent industrialization of the
area. BHPA is enhancing this experience by the addition of a post and beam barn that will house farm implements and a display on rice farming.
Two historical homes (1898;1910) furnished in period furnishings and style. The 1894 Wooster Common School No. 38 has been restored and furnished in period style. Items being collected for the interpretive barn.
Documentation on early area families and activities. Applications, including the historical narratives, of all the historical markers in the area.
Regular tours are conducted each years for the students of the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District, and others by appointment. Lectures given on request to area organizations.
