Description

The Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History is a local history museum dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of Stillwater, OK. The museum features a permanent exhibit focusing on Stillwater History from 1889 to the present with two temporary exhibits that change out 2-3 times each year. The Museum building houses a 200 seat auditorium in which cultural events such as concerts, recitals, public speakers and historical presentations are presented. The Auditorium is also rented to the public for meetings, weddings, receptions, recitals, etc. The Sheerar holds a yearly education program designed to help students understand what it would have been like to settle and live in Stillwater in 1889. History

The Sheerar Museum was founded by the Arts and Humanities Council. The Arts and Humanities Council received a $25,000 gift from Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Sheerar which began a community wide drive to raise $80,000 to purchase the historic First Church of Christ Scientist building to house a museum and cultural center. In 1973 the Sheerar Cultural and Heritage Center opened. In 1974, the Sheerar Museum officially opened to the public as part of the Sheerar Cultural and Heritage Center and was managed by volunteers. The Cultural and Heritage Center and Museum operated under the auspices of the Arts and Humanities Council until 1987 when the Stillwater Museum Association took over the responsibilities of managing and funding the Center and Musuem.
