The Mission of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision to the people of our culturally diverse region through our collections, exhibitions, public programs, and outreach in the visual arts. Education and public accessibility to art are extremely important to the staff and Board of Trustees. Consequently, AMSET's staff strives to make the art experience as welcoming and comfortable as possible for visitors. The curatorial staff strives to present a schedule of exhibitions that cover a wide range of tastes: from traditional painting to folk art, contemporary sculpture, photography, etc.

Dishman Art Museum

The Dishman Art Gallery is a teaching facility in the Art Department at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. Exhibitions change monthly. The gallery features one-person exhibition of contemporary artists, group exhibitions of contemporary artists, Art Department faculty shows, graduating senior shows, a national competition (The Dishman Competition), artist-in-residency, Grand Bal (annual art auction), and High School Scholarship exhibitions. There are three gallery spaces - Upper Gallery, Lower Gallery, and the Heinz and Ruth Eisenstadt Collection which consists of 150 19th-century paintings and 250 porceleins and objets d'art.

Fire Museum of Texas

The Fire Museum of Texas is housed in the 1927 Central Fire Station Headquarters. The mission of the museum is to educate the public about fire safety and the history of the fire service. In addition to guided tours the museum also offers a fire safety summer camp program, fire safety birthday parties, and a unique 3 day fire safety event for 2,000 school children in Ocotober in cooperation with Dupont. We are also working on our 5th annual Flamin' Hot Car Show, which is one of our main fundraisers. We are currently working on a fundraising project to create a firefighter memorial plaza with our 24 ft. fire hydrant as the centerpiece.

Edison Museum

The museum captures the life work of America's Inventor - Thomas Alva Edison. Through interactive exhibits, the story takes you through his childhood into his early work with telegraphy. Major inventions are detailed like the practical incandescent light bulb, cylinder phonograph and the motion picture camera. Edison personal life is explored with details about his nicknames for his children. The interactive exhibits include music, motion pictures, morse code simulation and a database of the 1.093 United States Patents issued to Thomas Edison.

McFaddin-Ward House

The McFaddin-Ward House is a historic house museum centered in a 12,800 square foot 1906 Beaux-Arts Colonial house. The museum, which opened in 1986, also has the 1907 Carriage House, with its garage, stables, servants quarters, and gymnasium; a visitor center; a curatorial/storage facility; and administrative offices located in a 1903 cottage. The museum is almost wholly supported by funds from the Mamie McFaddin Ward Heritage Foundation.

This museum has a wealth of 20th-century collections and historical knowledge. Although the museum s collections pertain solely to the house, the McFaddin family, and the collections that came with the house when it became a museum, they are large in number.

Texas Energy Museum

Although the Museum's primary focus is the history, technology and science of petroleum, much of our programming includes science in general. Modern exhibitions cover the geology and formation of oil, history of oil drilling technology, seismology, history of the U.S. and its reliance on oil; offshore drilling; refining; and the history of Spindletop and the growth of the Texas oil industry. Robotic characters and video animations relate much of the story. Children and family educational programs include Saturday outdoor events focusing on physics and "bubbles," dinosaurs and paleontology; astronomy and space exploration, and environmental science.

About the Conferenc

The annual SMA conference attracts more than 300 museum professionals, board members, and volunteers from a wide variety of small museums. We offer a large Museum Resource Hall and plenty of informal networking opportunities for you to talk with (and get ideas from!) other small museum professionals and volunteers.
