The Alamo began its existence in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the oldest of San Antonio's five Spanish mission. In 1724, Spanish officials relocated Valero to the spot that the Alamo now occupies. Two original building remain from the mission period (1724-1793)-the church, or modem Shrine, and the convento, or Long Barrack. The mission was desecularized in 1793.

Contemporary Art for San Antonio/ The Blue Star Art Space is a non-profit, non-collecting contemporary art center. The Blue Star Art Space's by-laws mandate that a maximum of 50% of the board be artists. Its mission is to advance contemporary art by presenting challenging, culturally diverse exhibitions and programs. Further, Blue Star seeks to positively impact the lives of San Antonio youth by creating a community-based dialogue between artists and youths.

Bexar County and the City of San Antonio are conducting a feasibility study on creating a San Antonio/Bexar County History Center in that location.

Built by educator Marion Koogler McNay in the 1920s, the Spanish Colonial Revival-style home opened as the first museum of modern art in 1954. Mrs. McNay believed that the experience of great art should be available to everyone. Today more than 100,000 visitors a year become captivated by magnificent works of art by 20th-century luminaries including Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
