Weeden House Museum

Historic House

Built in 1819, home of poet/artist Maria Howard Weeden, thought to be a man. Born in the house in 1846, died in the house in 1905. Became famous for painting black faces and creating poetry from their dialect. One of her books used in Gone With the Wind in 1939, did work for Joel Chandler Harris (Uncle Remus) and for Charles Dickens. Family owned house for 111 years. Opened as museum in 1981. Ghosts sited.
