The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum operates two facilities, 1 1/2 miles apart, and also offers programs at schools and other locations throughout the region. The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum is a private non-profit institution dedicated to the natural and the cultural history of the Hudson Highlands. The Museum is located about an hour north of New York City, in the Hudson Highlands, which is the area where the Hudson River cuts through the Appalachian plateau.

The Pember Library and Museum were established in Granville, New York, in 1909, by Franklin Tanner Pember and his wife Ellen Wood Pember. Both institutions continue to operate in the building designed and built for this purpose. The Pember Library is housed on the first floor of the marble structure and the Pember Museum of Natural History is located on the second floor.

The Pember Museum of Natural History and the Pember Nature Preserve provide programs, exhibits and activities for the people of eastern New York and western Vermont. It is the only institution of its kind in the region and serves large numbers of school children each year. The Museum and Preserve offer lectures, field trips, environmental studies, tours, hikes, day camps, outreach and many other special programs.

The Pember Nature Preserve, donated to the Pember Library and Museum in 1979, encompasses 125 acres of forest, wetland and fields on both sides of Black Creek, a tributary of the Battenkill. The mission of the Pember Nature Preserve is to provide a refuge for the region's native wildlife and plant species.
