The Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the United States devoted to Arab American history and culture. In 1928, the leaders of the Detroit Historical Society founded the Detroit Historical Museum and for the next 20 years the Society operated the Museum and preserved our region’s rich history through the collection and conservation of artifacts. In 1945, the Society transferred ownership of the Museum and the collections to the City of Detroit, and the Society focused on fundraising and marketing activities for the Detroit Historical Museum and, later, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.

In the winter, the men would have to go out and cut the ice from the ponds and lakes and then it would have to be stored in Ice Houses to be used during the hot summer months. Our collection includes all kinds of tools that were used in the ice industry like tongs, plows, ice boxes, measuring sticks, chippers, crushers, saws, a full size Ice Wagon.

The Museum is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan in a historic firehouse constructed in 1898 and used by the city of Ypsilanti until 1975. Museum founders Howard and Norma Weaver purchased the firehouse in 1999 with the vision to establish a museum. A new 10,000 square foot addition to the historic building was completed in the summer of 2002 as part of the Museum.

Our exhibits focus on the history of fire fighting in the State of Michigan and fire fighting technology.
