Cumberland Historical Society

The Cumberland Historical Society was founded on March 25, 1939. Its meetings and possesions were initially held in the Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland. The Society acquired the 1853 schoolhouse at 4A Blanchard Road from the Town of Cumberland, and has occupied the building as its meeting place and museum since 1989.

The John Hampden Society was formed in 1992 to honour the 17th centuryEnglish parliamentarian after whom the town of Hampden was named in 1794. In August 1994 eight members of the Society were guests at the Bicentennial Celebrations, and strong links have been forged between Hampden Historical Society and the John Hampden Society.

The museum is mentioned on the local tourist map, on the Duck Tours and sometimes during the scenic trolley and cruise-related rides. It is easy to find. We are located on the Portland Metro Bus Route 1, near Avon Street, on Congress Street. The Amtrak train from Boston arrives less than a mile from the museum, as do the major bus lines. It is a short cab ride from the train or bus stations. We are right off I-95, then off I-295, for those driving. Congress Street is a major throughfare in downtown Portland, and our Avon Street is right off Congress Street. We are located next to Joe’s Smoke Shop’s parking lot, down Congress Street from the Children’s Museum and the Portland Museum of Art.

Lovell Historical Society

The Lovell Historical Society, founded in 1974, collects and preserves historical and genealogical records, property, and artifacts, and encourages and supports interest in, and study of, the history of the town of Lovell.

The Society is located in the historic 1839 Kimball-Stanford House on Route 5 in Lovell (across from the Lake Kezar Country Club). This building is the repository for our museum and research center.

We are officially open on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 pm, or by appointment. We can be reached at our email address, lovellhist@fairpoint.net, or by telephone at 207-925-3234.  Over 9,000 items in our collection can be viewed at out website, www.lovellhistoricalsociety.org.

Naples Historical Society

The Naples Historical Society Museum and Information Center re-opened in June of 2012. The new building was completed in 2012. This building combined the Naples Information Center, The Historical Society Offices, and the Museum.

Old Town House Museum

Our Old Town House Museum is in the Old Town House on Rt 1. The building was given to us by the citizens of the Town of Gouldsboro. It was Gouldsboro's second Town House, built in 1884 after its predecessor burned. It was used for Town Meetings and elections from then until 1983.

The Eighth Maine Regiment Memorial Association, Inc.

For four years, the regiment marched, fought, and died side-by-side. After the war, the survivors vowed to maintain the bonds and the friendships they had formed. This Memorial was where those bonds were renewed each year.

The museum and its exhibits and outdoor arboretum provide a window into our history, diverse animal and plant life, and Maine environment. The building is also on the national register of historic places.

Portland Museum of Art

The Museum's collection of more than 15,000 objects includes decorative and fine arts dating from the 18th century to the present. The heart of the Museum's collection is the State of Maine Collection, which features works by artists such as Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Louise Nevelson, and Andrew Wyeth. The Museum has the largest European collection in Maine.

Thomaston Historical Society

The Thomaston Historical seeks to preserve the town's rich history, starting from the area's discovery by Captain George Waymouth in 1605. It is a town of many lifetimes. The first lasting settlement started in 1763, leading to the incorporation of Thomaston in 1777. In 1795 General Henry Knox, important Revolutionary War Patriot and General George Washington's Secretary of War, built a mansion place in Thomaston on the shores of the St. George River and initiated many new industries. Shipbuilding and lime quarries were major industries up until the early 1900s.
