Apache Historical Society

Originally built in 1901-02, this two story sandstone structure housed the Apache State Bank offices and other businesses throughout the years. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it now houses the museum, which displays local history including period clothing and antique furniture, books, more than 600 local photographs, original bank fixtures, art, medical and dental equipment, and other collections and memorabilia of many past citizens of Apache. Other group services can include a tour of the Mo Betta shirt factory. Admission is free, but donations accepted. Credit to Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department.

Designed by architect Walton Everman, it was completed in 1909 and occupied by the Phillips until their deaths. The mansion, which underwent a $500,000 renovation in 1930 in the midst of the Depression, reflects an opulent yet comfortable lifestyle. A 150-acre site containing the well-preserved, partially restored remains of an American Indian fort built in 1842. The fort was utilized by the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians for protection from the Plains Indians, and by pioneers traveling westward. It was last occupied by the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

Greater Southwest Historical Museum

Step through the front door of the Greater Southwest Historical Museum and you immediately enter South-Central Oklahoma's history. The museum is housed in Ardmore's former Oklahoma National Guard Armory. This native sandstone building was constructed by the WPA in 1936 and houses two other organizations. Within these historic walls you will find exhibits detailing the area's history from the mid 1800's to the present. The Museum tells the fascinating story of human settlement in South-Central Oklahoma, from early Native American history, to the farmers, ranchers and townspeople who built strong communities in the region. The Military Memorial Museum exhibits military history from the American Revolution through Desert Storm.
