Dinosaur Ridge is an outdoor museum along a trail along Alameda Parkway that goes up and over a spectacular mountain of a type called a hogback. Locally the mountain is named Dinosaur Ridge because of abundant dinosaur fossils along the trail. One site has Late Jurassic dinosaur bones from about 150 million years ago exposed in a cliff of sandstone; another has over 300 footprints made by Early Cretaceous dinosaurs about 100 million years ago. Another 15 or so interpretive sites include beautiful scenic overlooks of the Denver Basin and Red Rocks Park. At the visitor center at the base of the ridge on the east side are a gift shop and an exhibit hall, Trek Through Time.

The 30+ buildings set amid beautiful landscaping on 8 acres give the feel of a reproduction village showcasing how early Greeley and Weld County settlers lived, worked, played and worshipped. The High Plains area features Native American tipis, a homesteaders shack, chuck wagon and Warren Monfort farmhouse, where the 'Cattle Trails and Tales' exhibit traces the birth of the meat packing industry in Greeley. The central square features homes of various immigrant groups, a one-room school, church, railroad depot and streetcar. The 1920s business section has a working blacksmith shop, print shop and fire station with living quarters on the second floor. There is also an agricultural section with granary, silo and various farm implements.

Imagine what it was like going to school in a small mining town, or building the first log chapel, or being the first to ski down untouched slopes. Experience Frisco's rich and colorful history firsthand at the Frisco Historic Park at 2nd and Main. Here you can tour 11 original 1880 buildings that were once saloons, hotels, log homes, the original log chapel, and even a dairy cattle ranch house. Another fun way to learn more about life on historic Main Street is to view photos, dioramas and artifacts at the Schoolhouse Museum, then enjoy a stroll down Main Street and compare then to now.

At the Overland Trail Museum, located on Highway 6, east of the South Platte River in northeastern Colorado, your family can travel back in time and imagine themselves as part of the historic migration of gold seekers and early pioneers. Built in 1936, the museum was named after the Overland Trail stage route that branched off from the Oregon Trail in Nebraska and followed the south bank of the South Platte River through northeastern Colorado. This famous route was arguably the heaviest traveled road in America—and maybe even in the world—between 1862 to 1868.
