The museum opened on June 5, 2010, as a tribute to the thousands of men, women and families who have hiked and maintained the 2,189 mile long hiking trail that passes through 14 states from Maine to Georgia. Located in the Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Gardners, Pennsylvania, the museum is conveniently near Carlisle, Gettysburg and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

In January 2002, The Balch Institute merged into The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The archival and library collections of The Balch have been fully integrated into the Society and relocated to 1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. The building at 18 S. 7th Street is for sale. There are no exhibitions nor programs being staged at the 7th Street site. All operations and staff have also been relocated to 13th Street. The Cresco Station Museum: The society has regular programs at the Cresco Station Museum. From Memorial Day to Columbus Day, there is a monthly performance by local muscians and an Ice Cream Social. The museum is also the site of an Art's and Craft's Exhibit on the second Sunday of each month. Local Artists and Crafters display and sell their work. Exhibits change periodically.

the latter part of his life, Charles Brown III developed a passion for collecting old, rare automatic musical instruments. That collection is now part of the Bayernhof Museum. His collection is displayed in almost every room in the house. There are many antique music boxes, “monkey” organs, a Wurlitzer carousel organ, a Reproduco Piano-Pipe organ used in funeral homes and theaters, an Encore Automatic Banjo.
