Davie, Florida
History
Davie School Foundation was established in 1984 to restore and preserve Old Davie School, the oldest existing school building in Broward County. The school was designed by August Geiger in 1918 as the first permanent school in the Everglades and was used as a school until 1980. Working in partnership with Town of Davie, Soroptimist International of Davie and Davie Historical Society, the Foundation works to collect, preserve and interpret the history and cultural of the Davie Community.

Key West, Florida
History
The builder of the Oldest House was Richard Cussans, who immigrated to the Island of Key West in about 1826 from the Bahamas. He was in his mid-twenties when he built the house. He may have trained and apprenticed as a ship’s carpenter but he would not have been a shipwright at that young age. That level of craft was not easily achieved. He owned slaves, and likely used their labors in the construction of the Oldest House in 1829.
