Description

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, located at 900 N. Birch Road, Fort Lauderdale is situated on 35 subtropical acres between the Intracoastal Waterway and A1A on Fort Lauderdale beach. The whimsical estate was the winter retreat of Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, two American artists whose unconventional personal touches are evident throughout the property. For more information go to www.bonnethouse.org or call (954) 563-5393.

Mission

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens stewards the legacy of the Bartlett and Birch families by preserving their historic estate and providing programming that nurtures creative expression, delights the senses, educates, and honors the natural environment.

History

Chicago-born artist Frederic Clay Bartlett created Bonnet House in 1920 on South Florida oceanfront land given to him and his second wife, Helen Louise Birch, by her father, Hugh Taylor Birch, a prominent Chicago attorney, real estate investor, and naturalist. Helen died in 1925 and in 1931 Frederic married Evelyn Fortune Lilly. She spent winters at Bonnet House until 1995. Today, the estate is a preeminent house museum dedicated not only to historic and environmental preservation, but also to learning and creative expression – much like the Bartletts and Birches themselves.
