Description

Started in 1976 in the ballroom of an historical hotel, Window on the Plains Museum is now located on a 10-acre tract on the southwest corner of Dumas TX. Housed in almost 10,000 sq. ft., the museum tells the history of Moore County in a street scene, ranching and industrial displays. The museum focuses on the people, businesses and industries that have continued to make Moore County a thriving, vital community in the Texas Panhandle.

History

In January 1976, representatives from the Moore County Historical Commission, Moore County Art Association, and the Bicentennial Committee met to discuss the idea of creating a museum for Moore County. Collier Phillips, President of the Historical Commission was elected temporary Chairman. A steering committee was appointed, and these members met with the county commissioners in February to ask permission to house the proposed museum on the first floor of the Lew Haile Annex. Formerly the Sneed Hotel, this building had been given to Moore County by Mrs. Elizabeth Sneed Pool Robinette. Permission was granted, and work began on remodeling, building exhibit areas, acquiring and placing artifacts, and documenting. With 52 people donating more than 5,000 hours of labor, the Moore County Historical Museum was ready for its formal opening on July 4, 1976.
