Description

Katy Heritage Park was created in 2003 with a partnership between the KHS and the City of Katy. The Katy Heritage Society still owns and operates and is financially responsible for the properties. It's a great community venue, large lawn area for picnics and games, big pavilion for gathering, 5 buildings all connected by curving pavestone walkways lined with old fashioned street lights. We had over 1000 people come out for the lighting of our Christmas tree and it's our hope it will continue to be a destination for community events. We have one house that is used for public meetings and can be rented for private parties. We've just added a bandstand and have moved the old Humble Oil gas plant Mess Hall to the park, now we're renovating that important part of Katy's history for use as a museum and once again, a place to eat.

Mission

Our mission is to further educational and cultural development of the community by preserving and restoring historical landmarks and documents.

History

In 1978 the City of Katy purchased the old train depot from the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad. The city planned to save the depot and also renovate it so it could be used for meetings and storage. A group of citizens was concerned that the historical integrity of the depot would be lost if such renovations were allowed, and in 1979 they formed the Katy Heritage Society. The Depot was moved to Katy City Park and the new group carefully restored it with historical accuracy and later added a caboose. Through many generous donations the Katy Heritage Society has acquired and restored additional properties including the old post office and three houses. In 2002, the Katy Heritage Society and the City of Katy formed a partnership and in 2003 the historic homes were moved to build our new Katy Heritage Park.
