Description

Only ten miles from the last large locomotive builder in North America is the collection of the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society. That collection includes not only rare railroad pieces built by the men of woman of Erie, General Electric, it also includes a half a dozen unmodified Pullman railroad passneger cars, some dating back to the early twentieth century. Standing on the platform in front of the 1899 railroad depot that your relative might have once departed from, you can watch modern rail traffic go screaming by.

History

2006 in Lake Shore's 50th year. Originally a social organization of railroad devotees, the group was able to purchase and preserve both an 1899 and 1869 railroad depot on a 2.4 acre plot adjacent to the mainline New York City to Chicago railroad line. The Society preserves railroad equipment built at nearby Erie, PA General Electric as well as Pullman Passenger Cars. Also of note is a small, three car collection of refridgerator cars, which demonstrate the development of a type of railroad car very important to the local agricultural economy.
