Description

The mission of our society is to promote the study, knowledge and understanding of Polk County History. To this end the Society pays for the local 4th grade students to visit the museum as a part of their local history study. We reimburse the admissions and bus costs from donated memorial funds.

History

We began as a Historical Society in 1959. In 1999 we began the work on our museum that opened in 2000. We continue to maintain it and our historic property Brunk House.

Artifact Collections

We have major artifact collections representing the Native Americans in our area, the various industry from farming to timber, the local communities, a natural history corner, items that actually came over on the wagon trains, a doctor/dentist office from a local family, and more items than can be listed here.

Research Collections

We have photo archives of approximately 6,000 photos and 50,000 files on everything Polk County in our library.

Educational Programs

The third Saturday of each month (except July, Aug, Dec.) we have an educational program that is open to our community. This month we will have "West Salem, A look Back". Visit our web site for the latest list.

Governance

We are an all volunteer, non-profit, organization supported entirely by donations, admissions and grants. We receive no government support. We are governed by a 17 member board of directors.
