In 1976, in a one-room storefront log cabin, a small group of Swedes dared to dream about establishing a center of Swedish culture in America. Today’s Swedish American Museum is a bustling center of Swedish art, history, culture, and educational activities and programs. Each year, more than 43,000 visitors enjoy special exhibits, Swedish language classes, crafts, genealogy classes, concerts, lectures, films, and the interactive Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration.
Special programs and classes for fall 2008 include: the Museum’s quarterly rotating temporary exhibit Johnson-Morrison: Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Textile Art (Sept. 26 – Nov. 30), Treasures from the Trunk: Highlights from our Immigration History (Sept. 5), Scandinavian Day Festival (Sept.

Chicago, Illinois

History, Historical Society

We are a local historical society founded originally to coincide with the Old Edgebrook Landmark District, City of Chicago. We have expanded our horizons to include Sauganash for Forest Glen, neighboring communities here on the northwest side of Chicago. We are centered in the Caldwell's Reserve of Billy Caldwell's grant from the US government of 1828. We hope to establish a local history museum some day.

Morton Grove Historical Society
Morton Grove, Illinois

General, History, Historic House, Historical Society

The Morton Grove Historical Museum was built in 1888 by Nicholas Haupt as a home for his wife and eight children. His wife, Magdalena, died before the house was complete, leaving behind her husband and eight children. After Nicholas also died two years later, the Haupt children remained together in the house until the youngest was of age. Third daughter Elizabeth married Mathias Yehl in 1901 and they raised their six children in the home. Yehl daughter Dorothy remained in the house until the property was sold in 1984. The Morton Grove Historical Society, in cooperation with the Morton Grove Park District, saved the house from demolition and moved the house from its original location on Lincoln Avenue it to its present site in Harrer Park.
