Many decendants of the early residents of Calaveras County are still living, and it is possible to collect from them a vast fund of early history in the county.

The Earth Science Learning center is located in our retail store in Angels Camp. We teach the "Earth in a Nutshell" program where you will learn that you can't live without rocks and that you eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The presentation is for all groups - public, private and home schools, gem and mineral societies and service organizations.

The Red Barn is the former dairy barn of the old County Hospital and stands proudly as a dominant landmark along Mountain Ranch Road. The Red Barn Museum showcases Calaveras County’s rich history in agriculture, mining, logging, and ranching. Actual mining carts, farm wagons, and other donated objects make up the elaborate displays.

The Altaville Schoolhouse, located in the settlement of that name in Calaveras County, California, is one of the best preserved of the proverbial one-room little red schoolhouses in California. Built of brick in 1858 and actively used until 1950, the little school witnessed the instruction of hundreds of children from the Mother Lode region.
