The Museum is in a 1906 Burlington Passenger Station, the first Neo-Classical Revival architectural style on the Burlington line. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Indian Industrial School at Genoa was the fourth non-reservation boarding institution established by the Office of Indian Affairs. The facility opened on February 20, 1884, and, like other such schools, its mission was to educate and "civilize" Native American children.
The students that came to the Genoa Indian school were from more than 15 states and over 40 tribal Nations.

Organized in 1980, it’s purpose is to gather, preserve and make available records and other material relating to the history of Gothenburg and the surrounding area; to stimulate an interest in and knowledge of, the locality’s past, to discover and collect any material which may help to establish or illustrate the history of Gothenburg and the surrounding area and the exploration, settlement, and the development of it.
