We are a new museum, recently opened on February 1, 2011. The museum honors the memory of the astronauts aboard NASA Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107, which was lost while reentering Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003.

As the first major step in PEM’s expansion, some galleries are closed for renovation until fall 2013. The refurbished spaces will reopen with the highest level of environmental controls and a steady program of changing exhibitions. The Pember Library and Museum were established in Granville, New York, in 1909, by Franklin Tanner Pember and his wife Ellen Wood Pember. Both institutions continue to operate in the building designed and built for this purpose. The Pember Library is housed on the first floor of the marble structure and the Pember Museum of Natural History is located on the second floor.
