The Sandy Spring Museum was established in 1980 as the community was experiencing a rapid change in population and personality. A rural setting of farms, pastureland and, winding roads was becoming a bedroom community of four intersections and upscale commuters. As the museum has grown, it has become a focus for both long-time residents and newcomers—a link, like the spring itself, to a fascinating past.

The Great Hall displays slavery & civil rights documents along with art of the African Diaspora -- all presented against the backdrop of American history. The push for freedom via the Underground Railroad is discussed alongside the achievements and contributions of African Americans. The first floor gallery spaces are divided thematically and the lower level includes a resource library and meeting space for lectures, presentations and videos.

Spend a day in a one-room schoolhouse reliving education of over 100 years ago. Appropriately costumed teacher conducts class using McGuffy’s Readers and slate boards. Students may be assigned roles of students of that period. Gift shop sells books, slate boards, toys, and candy from days of yore. Shop is open at the end of each session.
