Heard-Craig Historic Center

The Heard-Craig Historic Center consists of a 7,000 sq. ft. historic home and carriage house built in 1900. The home contains breathtaking stained glass, original furnishings, personal belongings, family heirlooms, and art collected by the Heard and Craig families.

The Heard family was instrumental in the early development of the city of McKinney. Tours at the center tell the story of a fascinating family dedicated to their community and each other.

A Victorian Christmas special event will open on November 23 - 25, 2001 and will include decorations in every room of the home. Docents in costume will tell of the traditions of Victorian Christmas as visitors tour the site.

Chestnut Square might be described as an everyman's village. Set on two acres, just southeast of McKinney's historic downtown square, Chestnut Square consists of five houses, a general store, a chapel, a stage coah inn and a smoke house. The North Texas History Center is the larget collection of North Texas history. We share with visitors in different changing exhibits the life of settlers that came to North Texas and settled. Our ongoing exhibits include Pioneering Roots, Cowboys and Cattledrives, and Texas' role in the Civil War. Future Special exhibits will be foucusing on different communities of people that have called Texas home, with exhibts on Black Texans,and Native Peoples already in development. NTHC is also working on a Texas Veterans Exhibit. It is the hope of the NTHC to allow today's Texans and all visitors the oppurtunity to learn about all Texas people that contributed to making Texas the great State it is.
